In 1964, Elden Brittain bought half a share of a milk truck to transport milk cans on behalf of dairy farmers of Alberta. At this time, each farm only produced a few hundred litres of milk. A small quantity by today's standard means this could be transported to processors throughout Alberta in 10 gallon metal milk cans. Elden was known for his "3 can stack" where he would occasionally need to stack milk cans 3 high. This was quite the accomplishment for a man who was only 5 feet 6 inches!
In 1994, Elden sold Brittain Transport to his son Dale. By this time, Brittain Transport had grown from partial ownership of one truck to two full time trucks. As farming became commercialized in Alberta, transportation of milk transitioned to large food-grade tridem tractor-trailors. These larger trailers can transport up to 28,000 litres!
Over 55 years later, Brittain Transport is still family owned and operated in the community where it was founded. Today, Brittain Transport is responsible for delivering over 100,000 litres of raw milk daily. As cows don't take holidays, milk production and transportation is a 365 day-a-year operation. In it's 55+ year history, Brittain Transport has been navigating the Alberta roads every single day; rain or shine, blizzard or tornado.
